DANNY C'S WEEKLY TIP: SAVE YOUR PSD'S!

Once I contracted a designer to build a couple of sites. When the job was complete, he sent over everything I needed, including the psd's and necessary fonts. Like I always do, I did a little last minute work to the images, exported the files, then saved the updated psd's to my hard drive. About a month or so later, I formatted my computer... I backed everything up, but missed one single important directory - the folder containing many of my psd files. The reason I noticed these files were now missing was that I needed to make some important changes to the design - now I couldn't. I contacted the designer, who told me he did not have backups, and had deleted everything.

It amazes me that there are designers out there who do not provide psd's for site designs. They compare that to programmers giving out source code... a silly comparison. A word of advice: always ask designers beforehand if all psd's and fonts will be provided upon handing over the completed design. If the designer says no, thank him/her and move on to the next designer. Never pay for a design that does not include psd's, because I assure you, there will come a time when you have to make edits to one of these designs, and it's simply not worthwhile to pay the designer for every small edit. (Note: This excludes banner designs, which usually are not included in psd format. If you expect to have to make small edits to banners, then you may also request these.)

Trust me. You will save yourself a lot of time and grief down the road if you always save your psd's... and not only save them, but back them up!
